The Storyteller Chronicles: Treehouse of Horror II (1991)

The Nightly Storyteller Speaks

Every choice leaves a mark. Some faint, others carved deep enough to haunt you forever. I’ve made my share of mistakes—some small, some catastrophic—and I wonder if I’d be standing in this same place had I chosen differently.

But the truth is… regret doesn’t change a thing. You can’t bargain with yesterday. The necklace in my pocket hums like it agrees with me, and for the first time, I realize I don’t know if that’s comforting or terrifying.

Review

Treehouse of Horror II marked the second Halloween special from The Simpsons, airing in 1991. Like its predecessor, it split into three wonderfully twisted tales, each dripping with dark comedy and cultural satire.

Monkey’s Paw

The Simpsons get their hands on the infamous cursed paw, and every wish backfires in hilarious yet sinister fashion. From a celebrity-filled Springfield to Maggie’s surprising choice, it’s a perfect parody of greed and consequence.

The Bart Zone

A chilling nod to The Twilight Zone. Bart’s ability to control reality with his thoughts transforms him into Springfield’s pint-sized tyrant. His family’s nervous smiles—and Homer’s outright panic—hit the balance of funny and frightening.

If I Only Had a Brain

Mr. Burns stealing Homer’s brain for a Frankenstein-style experiment? It’s as absurd as it is brilliant. Watching Burns interact with Smithers while unknowingly carrying Homer’s personality is peak Simpsons humor wrapped in horror.

What makes this anthology shine is its ability to keep the laughs sharp without losing the eerie undertone. It’s a reminder that horror and comedy can share the same haunted house.

Did You Know?

This was the first Treehouse of Horror to use the now-iconic tombstone gag in the opening credits.

James Earl Jones, who narrated the first special, did not return here—but his absence didn’t stop this episode from cementing itself as a fan favorite.

The Monkey’s Paw parody is considered one of the most famous Simpsons segments ever, often referenced outside the show.

The Storyteller Chronicles

When I got home, the postcard from Rewind sat waiting by the door, its edges frayed like it had traveled through more than just the mail. I held it in my hand for only a moment before the phone rang.

The number was unknown.

The voice on the other end was distorted, yet calm:
“There are more working against you than you realize.”

The line went dead.

I went upstairs, the floorboards groaning under each step. My vision blurred, my chest heavy. I collapsed into bed, drifting into dreams that weren’t mine.

Fragments. A voice whispering “It’s fake.” Shadows laughing at me in corners that shouldn’t exist. Cold air against my face as though someone leaned in close to breathe the words directly into my ear.

Then the shrill buzz of my alarm clock dragged me back. My body felt foreign—numb but heavy.

I dressed for work in silence, searching the house for any sign of Nyra. Nothing. Not even a trace she’d been here.

Val. I’d have to find Val. If there’s a path left that isn’t already corrupted, she’s the one who might know where it leads.
