The Storyteller Chronicles: Tales from the Crypt (1972)

The Nightly Storyteller Speaks

I watch her—Nyra—chasing after those tiny figures like they’re fragments of her own sanity, her frustration boiling over when they slip through her fingers. I’ve known her for months, maybe longer, and yet tonight I realize: I don't know her at all. The way she moves, the way her jaw tightens, the strange fire in her eyes—it’s like watching a stranger.

“You don’t,” whispers the voice of the necklace, a cold draft across my skin. I jump, startled, my heart hammering against my ribs. Did it just agree with me? Or was it something else entirely? Something dark. Something waiting. I can still feel its breath across my mind.

Her fury dissipates only when I call her name, but the memory of it lingers in my chest like a cold stone. All the while, the Crypt on screen seems to mock us, its grotesque laughter sliding through the celluloid shadows. The low hum of the television fills the room as we sit in uneasy silence.

Movie Review – Tales From the Crypt (1972)

Tales From the Crypt is a twisted carnival of morality and horror, a film anthology that’s equal parts grotesque, ironic, and darkly humorous. Each segment teaches a lesson—often gruesome—about greed, pride, and betrayal.

What makes it remarkable isn’t just the macabre stories themselves but the framing device of the Crypt Keeper, that skeletal host who grins and guffaws as he drags his victims toward doom. It’s the perfect mix of camp and chills, the kind of movie that sticks with you, not because it terrifies outright, but because it reminds you how fragile our lives and our choices really are.

The anthology format allows each tale to hit hard, fast, and with a sly wink. From the chilling tension of “And All Through the House” to the grim irony of “Reflection of Death”, the film thrives on the unexpected, wrapping moral lessons in gothic, sometimes absurd, horror.

Did You Know?

The film was based on the EC Comics of the 1950s, infamous for their violent and macabre content.

The Crypt Keeper’s laugh was achieved by manipulating the voice in post-production for that unnerving, high-pitched cackle.

Several of the tales were adapted from comic stories that had been banned during the 1950s comic book scare.

The Storyteller Chronicles

After catching my breath, I pull out my phone and dial Val. My voice shakes, though I try to mask it. “Something’s happening, Val. I… I don’t know what to do.”

She listens, silent for a long moment. Then she sighs. “It’s too late tonight. Let’s regroup tomorrow after work.”

I hang up and glance at Nyra, who’s been watching me, her expression unreadable. I try to tell her the plan, but her patience snaps like a brittle branch. She explodes, a storm of furious energy spilling over in words I can barely keep up with. Without another glance, she storms out, determined to find the figures herself. The front door slams behind her, rattling the windows and leaving a faint scent of rain and tension in the air.

I retreat to my house, my heart still hammering. I open the door—and there it is. A postcard, face down on the scuffed hardwood floor. I bend to pick it up, wary. It feels like slick, thick paper. The name “Rewind” is scrawled across the back.

Before I can read further, my phone rings. Unknown number. My pulse spikes. I hesitate, thumb hovering over the screen. And then—the line rings. Unknown.
