The Pit (1981) – Storyteller Chronicles

Opening Monologue

The room smelled of damp wood and stale dust—like a basement long forgotten. I don’t remember walking here, yet here I stand. The walls pulse faintly with shadows, and the silence is so heavy it feels like it’s pressing on my chest.

“You should be grateful,” the necklace whispers, its voice coiling in my ear like smoke.

“Grateful? For what? For waking up in another place I can’t explain?” My hands tighten into fists.

“For surviving. Many don’t.”

A shiver cuts down my spine, and I can see my breath in the air though the room isn’t cold. My reflection in the cracked glass ahead shows my clenched hands glowing faintly—wrapped in tendrils of purple energy. The power hums like a swarm of bees beneath my skin.

“I don’t even know what I’m surviving anymore,” I say, but the necklace only chuckles—a sound like broken wind chimes in a storm.

Movie Review – The Pit (1981)

The Pit is a strange little gem of Canadian horror. On the surface, it’s a coming-of-age story about a lonely boy named Jamie who finds companionship in something far darker than a childhood friend. Hidden in the woods is a deep pit filled with creatures Jamie calls the “Trollogs.” They’re hungry, and Jamie starts feeding them… starting with raw meat, and eventually, the neighbors who wrong him.

The film is a bizarre mix of horror, awkward comedy, and unsettling psychological undertones. At times, it feels like an after-school special gone horribly wrong, complete with uncomfortable themes of isolation and obsession. Yet, it’s exactly that strangeness that makes The Pit memorable in the horror genre—it’s a movie you won’t easily forget, whether you love it or hate it.

Did You Know?

The Pit was filmed in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, giving its small-town setting an authentic Midwestern eeriness.

The movie’s star, Sammy Snyders (Jamie), was best known for playing Tom Sawyer in a Canadian TV series before diving into horror.

The “Trollogs” were puppets created on a low budget, but their crude design only adds to the surreal nightmare quality.

Tidbits for Horror Fans

The Pit has gained a cult following over the years, often praised for its uncomfortable atmosphere and unintentional campiness.

The film explores childhood loneliness and neglect, making Jamie’s descent into darkness both tragic and terrifying.

While not a mainstream hit, it remains a staple of obscure ‘80s horror—a must-watch for fans of strange, unsettling cinema.

The Storyteller Chronicles – Tacos from the Shadows

The energy around my hands flares brighter, casting twin shadows against the wall. But they don’t stay shapeless—no, they twist, curl, and fold until the outlines are unmistakable. Two tacos step forward from the dark, their shells crisp, their fillings steaming, and their voices echoing in this hollow place.

“I am Tobito!” one yells, his tortilla sizzling with every word.

“And I,” the other announces with deep bravado, “am the Refried Avenger!”

The scent hits first—warm tortillas, grilled beans, and sharp chili peppers—filling the air and overpowering the musty dampness of the room.

Val takes a shaky step back, her shoes crunching against loose plaster. Her eyes widen, darting between the two glowing taco figures. She presses a hand over her mouth as though the heat in the air is stealing her breath.

“They’re… talking tacos?” she stammers, her voice cracking as the words echo against the stone walls.

Tobito shakes his head with flair, a bead of salsa dripping from his edge and sizzling as it strikes the ground. “No, no—get it right. We’re motivational tacos!” His voice carries the confidence of a preacher, ringing through the chamber like gospel.

The glow fades just enough for me to take in their familiar presence. My chest loosens. My pulse steadies.

“You look different,” the Refried Avenger says, narrowing his seasoned eyes. “Stronger.”

“I don’t know how you got here,” I whisper, swallowing down confusion, “but I’m glad to see you.”

The scent of grilled tortillas and spiced beans lingers, momentarily pushing back the mold and dampness of this cursed place. For the first time in a long time, I don’t feel entirely alone.
