Misery (1990) – Nightly Storyteller

Opening Monologue

The night was calm—or so I thought. A hush had fallen over the neighborhood, the kind of silence that presses against your eardrums until you start hearing things you’re not sure are real. I tried to speak, to share my thoughts as I always do, but the words stuck. The necklace—cursed, alive, whatever it has become—throbbed like a warning siren against my chest. My monologue was cut short, strangled in my throat. A reminder: I may be the voice, but I am not in control.

It made me think of captivity, of what it means to be trapped by forces beyond your will. Which brings us to tonight’s film…

The Movie – Misery (1990)

Rob Reiner’s Misery, adapted from Stephen King’s novel, is not your typical monster movie—at least not in the supernatural sense. Instead, it delivers a monster that feels terrifyingly human: Annie Wilkes.

James Caan plays Paul Sheldon, a novelist who finds himself in Annie’s “care” after a car crash. At first, she’s his savior. But quickly, her obsession with his work and her own twisted rules reveal a prison of pain and psychological torture. Kathy Bates doesn’t just play Annie Wilkes—she becomes her. The sweetness curdles, the smile hides knives, and her unpredictable rages make her one of the most memorable villains in horror cinema.

Unlike vampires or werewolves, Annie is a reminder that horror doesn’t need claws or fangs. Sometimes, it just needs devotion pushed to its most dangerous extreme.

Tidbits & Trivia

Kathy Bates won an Academy Award for her role as Annie Wilkes—the first time an Oscar was awarded for a horror performance.

James Caan wasn’t the first choice for Paul Sheldon. Warren Beatty and Michael Douglas were among those considered.

The infamous “hobbling” scene in the book is even more brutal than in the movie. (Trust me: you’ll never look at an axe the same way again.)

Stephen King has said Annie Wilkes is a metaphor for drugs—his battle with addiction made him feel like a prisoner to something that both “cared for” and destroyed him.

Did You Know?

The film was shot mostly on a soundstage, with carefully controlled lighting to emphasize the claustrophobic feeling of being trapped. Reiner himself said he wanted the audience to “feel the walls closing in” just as Sheldon did.

The Storyteller Chronicles

Six months have passed since my slash. The scar has healed, and my home—once broken and bleeding—now stands repaired. But for all the hammering and fresh paint, the silence in these walls feels heavier than before.

We still haven’t found her. The one the necklace whispers about. The one the mysterious caller insists must be uncovered. Speaking of him, he’s been more persistent lately. His calls come at strange hours, his voice always steady, always cryptic. He never gives me much, just enough to keep me listening, just enough to keep me wondering.

This morning, a flyer slid under my door. Rewind. Again. The looping clock in its design stared back at me, as if mocking the very concept of time.

Then came the knock. I opened the door to find Nyra—disheveled, tense, eyes burning with urgency. She didn’t waste words.
“We have to find my former clan,” she said. “Soon.”

I noticed something dangling from her hand—a small, ornate dagger, the hilt carved from bone, its blade etched with symbols I didn’t recognize. She didn’t explain it, and I didn’t ask. But when she crossed the threshold, the necklace burned hotter, as if it knew the dagger.

Before I could respond, my phone rang. Val’s name lit the screen.

And that’s where I’ll leave you…
