"Possessions of the Damned: A Flashback to Child’s Play and the Price of Collecting"
Monologue of the Nightly Storyteller
There’s something curious about humanity’s obsession with possession—not the demonic kind, though that has its place—but the compulsion to collect. Trinkets, heirlooms, antiques... objects we cling to like charms, as if they tether us to meaning. But not all meaning is benign.
I’ve started to wonder: do we own our collections, or do they own us?
Take this necklace—cursed or not, it's mine now. I didn’t even realize I was fidgeting with it until Val pointed it out at work. “You polishing it or casting a spell?” she joked, laughter hiding just a hint of concern. I laughed too, but my grip tightened without thinking. She doesn't know about the messages. The last call. The voice that promised I was on my way to becoming… something else.
I don’t remember choosing to wear the necklace today. But there it was, warm against my chest. Whispering.
Val waved it off with a chuckle. “Relax. It’s just a necklace.”
But we both know better.

Flashback Friday: Child’s Play (1988)
Before Annabelle, before Megan, there was Chucky—a foul-mouthed, knife-wielding Good Guy doll that changed the face of toy chests forever. Directed by Tom Holland, Child’s Play is a masterclass in twisted innocence and paranoia. It asks a question as old as humanity itself: What if the thing you trusted the most turns on you?
And let’s face it—Chucky isn’t just a doll. He’s a collector’s nightmare. An artifact of childhood turned vessel for a serial killer's soul thanks to a voodoo chant. That’s what makes him terrifying: he’s the perfect Trojan Horse.
🎬 Did You Know?
The character of Chucky was partially inspired by the real-life haunted doll “Robert,” housed in Key West, Florida. Legend has it Robert caused everything from car accidents to divorce.
Ed Gale, a little person actor and stuntman, played Chucky in a suit for the first two films. After that, most of Chucky's movement was achieved through animatronics and CGI.
The original script was darker and more psychological, originally titled Batteries Not Included (before Spielberg claimed that title).
Brad Dourif, who voiced Chucky, reportedly recorded his lines alone in a dark sound booth to “get into character.” Imagine being that committed to a 2-foot killer doll.
Collectibles, Curses & Consequences
The connection to the Storyteller isn’t just thematic—it’s personal. Collecting strange artifacts (like a mysterious necklace) opens doors. Chucky’s origin involved voodoo. The Storyteller’s path may be darker, older, and deeper than that. The more he’s drawn to strange trinkets, the more those trinkets start pulling him somewhere else… somewhere monstrous.
Maybe this necklace isn’t the only thing he’s collected unknowingly. Maybe it’s not the first.
